Last week, we had the pleasure of holding  a fashion career talk at Nkumba University, an event overflowing with enthusiastic students eager to explore the exciting world of fashion. Our goal was to unveil the hidden  opportunities within the industry, going beyond the traditional image of a fashion designer hunched over a sewing machine.

The discussion, also highlighted the importance of gaining exposure and experience. We encouraged students to actively participate in fashion competitions, both nationally and internationally. These competitions provide a platform to showcase their talent, receive valuable feedback from industry professionals, and potentially gain recognition that could propel their careers.

The conversation further  explored the benefits of attending and participating in fashion shows Attending, volunteering at, and even organizing shows, these  allow students to immerse themselves in the industry’s current trends, observe the creative process from conception to runway, and network with established names in fashion.

Volunteering was also highlighted as a powerful tool. By offering their skills and passion at fashion-related events, students gain practical experience, build their resumes, and forge connections within the industry. This not only benefits their own career trajectory but also allows them to contribute to the vibrant fashion community.

However, the talk went beyond the practical aspects. We delved into the diverse career paths available in fashion. Students learned about roles in design, merchandising, marketing, styling, photography, and visual communication – just to name a few. We emphasized that their creative energy and passion for fashion could be channeled into a multitude of exciting avenues.

Ultimately, our goal was to open their eyes to a world brimming with opportunities that might not have been immediately apparent. We aimed to spark a curiosity about filling the gaps that exist within the fashion industry, encouraging them to carve their own unique paths.

The talk concluded with a powerful message: professionalism is paramount. We challenged students to cultivate a professional demeanor in their academic pursuits, as this approach serves as a valuable stepping stone for their future careers.

We are grateful to the Head of Department Ms. Sarah Nabunnya and the Dean of Faculty Mr. Kaggwa for the opportunity to impact their students. In Mr Kaggwa’s conclusion speech, he eloquently wrapped up the event by thanking us for “lighting up the candles” of his students.

This resonated deeply, as it captured the essence of our mission. We hope to have ignited a passion for fashion within them, providing the spark that will illuminate their journey towards fulfilling careers in this ever-evolving industry.

The chat with the students was truly inspiring. Their enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge were contagious, and we left the event feeling optimistic about the future of fashion. We wish them all the best in their creative endeavors and look forward to witnessing their contributions to the world of fashion.
